Farm Business Management Skill Set

The Farm Business Management skill set is an accredited, national recognised credential that is designed to meet the needs of business owners, managers or workers to acquire the skills and knowledge to manage farm business and business risks.

You will learn:

  • The key steps to effectively develop, monitor, manage and review farm business operations and performance in line with relevant legislation and codes of practice.
  • Industry insights and strategies to grow existing business including new acquisitions
  • How to apply advanced risk management strategies
  • How to apply knowledge of business structures and stakeholder relationships to drive business performance in a cost-effective manner. 
  • Advanced skills to analyse business performance and achieve business sustainability
  • How to implement effective marketing strategies to drive sales and support growth
  • The financial and operational skills to manage and improve a farm business


Course Outcomes and Units Achieved

The program involves the completion of four agribusiness units, for which you will receive a Statement of Attainment from UQ Skills (RTO 1511).

The Farm Business Management Skill Set (AHCSS00030) comprises four units of competency, covering the following topics:

  • Develop and implement family business structures and relationships
  • Develop and review a business plan
  • Monitor and review business performance
  • Manage risk


Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, to apply you must be an owner, manager or worker of a farm in Queensland. 

You will require access to a rural business and associated business records. You will also need access to a computer and a reliable internet connection to complete your course. Access to Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Acrobat is expected, and Windows is required, therefore. If you have an Apple device you will need to load Windows. We will communicate with you by email during the course.

Delivery Methods and timing

2 weeks duration (2 days each week).

Blended Delivery (Combination of face to face and online). This program can be delivered in various centralised locations across the state depending on minimal numbers.  


Funding is offered by the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment, Small Business and Training towards this skill set for eligible people under the Higher-Level Skills Program. If you are an owner of, manager of or worker on a farm in Queensland you may be able to access funding for the majority of this program.   

A co-contribution fee applies of $120 per person
